What Is A Socket Set Screw?

The most popular use of a socket set screw is for fastening. The main feature of this screw is its headless design. Normally, use it to secure an object within or against another object. However, there is no head projecting past the end of the screw thread. These set screws are threaded with a wrenching tool. The overall design of these has a nice range of point styles, which makes them enticing to those within the aerospace industry

MS Socket Set Screw Features

How does a socket set screw work exactly? Well, this is a screw that has a head. Then, the thread will extend all the way to the head. A blind set screw is almost always driven with an internal-wrenching drive, such as a hex socket (Allen), star (Torx), square socket (Robertson), or slot. The set screw passes through a threaded hole in the outer object and then tightened against the inner object. This prevents it from moving relative to the outer object.

An example application is when it is screwed into a pulley hub so that its end-point bears firmly against the shaft. The fastening action is by friction between the screw and the shaft, often with some amount of elastic or plastic deformation of one or both. The durability of the socket set screw makes it great for many military applications and tasks.

Socket Set ScrewDrive Types

The aerospace industry is vast and filled with many different uses for all of the screws in the industry. So, it only makes sense that there are multiple applications for these products and the various styles include:

  • straight slot
  • hex socket
  • square socket
  • external hex
  • external square
  • bristol spline

These various styles are to ensure proper usage for each type of screw. At Sesco, we have the ability to custom manufacture any set of screws to adhere to the rigors and demands of your job. We can meet the specifications required to complete any task or application. We understand how crucial it is to be exact in the aerospace industry. When you turn to us, you will get screws that perfectly adhere to your needs.

Common Applications

Their most common applications are for securing a pulley or gear to a shaft. In other words, rather than binding materials together with threads, use this screw to apply pressures at the tip to anchor objects in a set position. By being headless in design, the screw is fully threaded. This means it has no head projecting past the diameter of the screw thread.
